Exiled Chimurenga music legend Thomas Mapfumo (72), who last performed in Zimbabwe 14 years ago has arrived in the country for his homecoming Bira concert set for the Glamis Arena on April 28. Mapfumo and his band Blacks Unlimited landed at Robert Mugabe International Airport on Wednesday night from the United States. Mapfumo’s fans are expected to pay $30 for the cheapest ticket to the show. VIP will be $100 (online) and $150 (physical).
The concert which is being organised by Entertainment Republic is expected to feature music superstar Oliver Mtukudzi, Winky D, Suluman Chimbetu, Andy Muridzo and Gary Tight. The first batch of tickets for Mapfumo’s homecoming show that were going for at least $10 were sold out with Entertainment Republic unveiling a second lot with the cheapest going for $20. However the tickets were raised to $30 after the 16th of April. Ticket sales close on April 27 at 4pm and there will be no ticket sales on the day of the show.
Physical tickets are available at Entertainment Republic offices at 113 Samora Machel Avenue in Harare. After the April 28 gig, Mapfumo said he hopes he will get the chance to visit his rural home in Guruve.
