Harare Magistrate Barbra Mateko sentenced Rexter Gurure (26) to two years in prison for reckless driving. Mateko also gave him a life ban from driving and cancelled his class two drivers licence. Gurure who is employed as a driver of a commuter omnibus driver, colloquially known as a kombi, was arrested for driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the road and against oncoming traffic in the central business district in January.
He was convicted after a full trial despite his spirited attempts to deny the charges. Magistrate Mateko said that it was necessary to give custodial sentences as kombi drivers were proving to be a law unto themselves and needed to be deterred.
