Small-scale miners who filed a lawsuit against former president Robert Mugabe and his family demanding access to the Mazowe farm have withdrawn their High Court application. The small-scale miners who are led by Shepherd Nyazvigo had approached the High Court and filed an urgent application when they were chased away from Smithfield Farm in Mazowe in 2013. They then returned in November 2017 and resumed operations after Mugabe fell following a military intervention by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. Other small-scale artisanal miners also took advantage of Mugabe’s fall to invade Smithfield Farm.
The miners have since withdrawn the lawsuits without giving reasons. An excerpt from the notice of withdrawal reads,
…take notice that applicants (miners) hereby withdraw their urgent chamber application against the second respondent and will tender wasted costs.
