MDC Alliance Fumes At China, Britain For Backing Mnangagwa Ahead Of Elections, Hints At Involvement In "Coup"

Welshman Ncube, the spokesperson for the opposition coalition, the MDC Alliance has hit out at China and Britan for seemingly backing president Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of 2018 harmonised elections. Ncube said that the two countries should be insisting on free, fair and credible elections, instead. The MDC leader went on to suggest that the two countries may have actively supported last November’s military intervention which resulted in the fall of former president Robert Mugabe.

Said Ncube,

We think it is inappropriate for the British and the Chinese to pick a horse in this election. They should, instead, insist on Zimbabwe abiding by international norms and standards for the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

There is sufficient evidence that some of these countries participated in the coup in November. We think they should stop interfering given the role they played in the transfer of power last year.

This comes after the Chinese and British embassies both seemingly endorsed Mnangagwa. The Chinese diplomat in Harare, Zhao Baogang, told journalists
