Mnangagwa To Commission Kariba South Hydro Power Station Expansion Project

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will later on today, commission the $533 million Kariba South Hydropower Station expansion project. The project was completed by Chinese contractor, Sino Hydro Corporation early this month after work commenced in November 2014.

The project’s two new generators, unit 7 and unit 8, will add 300 megawatts to the 750 megawatts which were generated by the initial 6 units. This means that the power generated from Kariba will stand at 1050 megawatts.

With the completion of the Kariba expansion project Zimbabwe will cut down on the electricity it has been importing from regional suppliers South Africa power utility Eskom and Hydro Cahorra Bassa (HCB) of Mozambique. Zimbabwe is expected to save about $78 million annually.
