Govt Warns Of Increased ZRP, VID Presence On Roads During Easter Holidays, Says It Will Not Tolerate Harassment, Corruption

The government through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has warned the motoring public that there will be an increase in Zimbabwe Republic Police and Vehicle Inspections Department (VID) officers on the country’s roads during the holidays. However, the government emphasised that this was only to safeguard lives and warned that it will not tolerate harassment and extortion of motorists. The ministry also warned that it will be impounding all vehicles which are not road worthy.

In a statement, the ministry said:

It is once again time for the celebration of the Easter and Independence holidays, the time when thousands travel to the rural areas to reunite with family and friends or to attend Easter Church conventions at various centres throughout the country. I am therefore urging all road users to use the roads wisely and observe all traffic rules and regulations.

I would like in particular to appeal to operators of Public Service Vehicles not to deploy defective and unroadworthy vehicles in an effort to maximize profits during the holidays. The Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Vehicle Inspectorate Department will be manning all our major highways, not to harass motorists, but to look out for any defective vehicles and to remind them to drive to arrive alive. It is the expectation of Government that those deployed should not be overzealous in the execution of their duties. To the contrary, they should strive to be courteous and respectful at all times. Any requests for bribes by officers from VID or ZRP should be reported promptly to the authorities.

To ensure that sanity prevails, all defective vehicles will be removed from the roads. I thus urge operators of Public Service Vehicles to provide safe and timeous service which should see everybody being transported to their destination safely. Operators are also urged to desist from the habit of over-
working their drivers resulting in failure to adhere to their timetables.

May I take this opportunity to remind operators that they are obliged to provide the services authorized in terms of their Route Authority and to adhere to timetables. It is the obligation of the operator to ensure that their buses are not overloaded; drivers are not under the influence of alcohol; and to encourage their drivers to stick to the regulated speed limits, as these are the major causes of fatal accidents. My Ministry will deal decisively with any operators whose drivers behave in a manner that disregards the sanctity of human life.

It is my hope that the forth-coming Easter and Independence Holidays will be accident-free. This is possible if all drivers exercise due caution and adhere to all traffic laws.
May I take this opportunity to wish the motoring public a safe and accident-free Easter and Independence Holidays.

Hon. J. McD. Gumbo, MP
MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT
