Teachers today took to the streets of the capital and marched from Zimta House to Causeway Building to protest against poor pay. The educators joined doctors who have been on strike for the past 27 days protesting against inadequate allowances and lack of essential drugs and equipment.

The teachers are demanding:

  • 100% salary increment
  • 75% increment on rural allowance
  • 50% increment on housing, transport allowances
  • safety of teachers in schools during elections
  • restoration of vacation leave

The teachers have threatened to go on strike when schools open for the second term in May 2018 if their demands are not met by the government.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details come in.

  1. To my brothers in government, the civil service problem requires a holistic solution, not a piecemeal approach. For a long time their conditions of service have been wearing out and there is need for a massive redress. ALL of them, not just Doctors and Nurses need redress. Otherwise we will witness daily strikes and lockouts!
