$1 000 To Represent MDC-T In 2018 Elections

Current members of parliament are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee of $1 000 for them to be considered as candidates in the harmonised elections later this year.

According to a circular written by MDC-T, a rural councillor will pay only $10, an urban councillor $50 and a proportionate representative $150. MDC-T said candidate selection would start with those constituencies and wards that had no representation, which the party refer to as “orphaned” constituencies and council wards. Part of the circular reads:

Both applications for the national panel list and orphaned constituencies and wards shall attract the following fees. A councillor rural $10 and urban $50. Proportionate Representative $150 and sitting MPs $1 000. Please note that no provincial executive committee nor executive can disqualify an applicant.

An unnamed MP complained about the application fee saying that they had agreed with the late Morgan Tsvangirai that sitting MPs should use their vehicles and resources to campaign in other constituencies in return for a free ticket to represent the party. However,  a member of the MDC-T standing committee member defended the decision to impose a $1 000 application fee saying:

They have been in Parliament for five years and earning a salary in the region of $2 000 per month. The party is merely asking for $1 000 to oil party campaigns and that is not asking too much.
