University of Zimbabwe (UZ) vice-chancellor Levi Nyagura, is reportedly still coming to the office for work, despite the fact that he was placed on suspension by the University of Zimbabwe Council to allow investigations to take place. Nyagura was suspended on allegations of abuse of office after he allegedly unprocedurally awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree to former First Lady Grace Mugabe in 2014.
The UZ Council is now accusing chairman, Buzwani Mothobi of defying the resolution to suspend Nyagura. A letter written to members of the UZ Council by lawyer Thembinkosi Magwaliba reads,
Consequently, the situation at the university has been highly tense and is not conducive for the discharge of the normal functions of the university by all concerned.
This is because some of the subordinates to Professor Nyagura are witnesses in the on-going criminal case and have to report to him as part of the normal business duties at the university.
Shingi Munyeza whop is the chairperson of the risk and audit committee, added,
When a board passes a resolution and such resolution is not implemented at the time agreed without any explanation is tantamount to subversion of the board charter and indeed good corporate governance.
Nyagura who has been defiant about the degree has gone as far as threatening lecturers with dismissal for disowning and challenging the awarding of the degree.
