Charles Magombedze of Chikova Village in Madzivire communal lands in Chivi, Masvingo was sentenced to an effective 72 years in jail when he appeared before regional magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga facing 8 counts of rape. Magombedze pleaded guilty and was intially sentenced to 78 years in prison, but six years were conditionally suspended.
He requested to be hanged saying he was unable to stop committing the crimes if left alive. Magistrate Malunga treated some of the cases as one for the purposes of sentencing. Magombedze used dangerous weapons like iron bars, axes and machetes when he committed the offences. He raped a woman in Chitembe Village in Madzivire before abusing a pupil at Chibaya High School near Bondolfi Mission in June last year. He raped a woman who was doing laundry along Tugwi River in Chivi. In October last year, he raped another woman who was going to church at Nyambi Village near Mhiti Business Centre in Chivi. He went on to rape numerous women before he was apprehended.
