Bulawayo Deputy Mayor Appears In Court Over MDC-T Violence

Bulawayo deputy mayor Gift Banda, councillor Ndlovu and 10 other MDC-T members appeared in court today facing public disorder charges following violent clashes between rival factions over the weekend.

Banda was freed on bail of $200 while the rest were released on $50 bail each. They will all appear in court to answer charges of public disorder at a later date. Defence lawyer Dumisani Dube said that some of the members who appeared in court today (Wednesday) were actually victims of violence who went to report that they had been attacked and were called back by the police and arrested. He confirmed that one person is battling for his life in a city hospital. Dube also urged the police to investigate the matter without being partial.

  1. The police were present and should know the circumstances leading to the violence. Violence can be prevented if the police are vigilant and impartial in the deliberations of their duties.
