Khupe Dismisses Chamisa’s “Unprocedural” Appointment, Says National Council Does Not Have the Power To Elect Leaders

MDC-T vice-president Thokozani Khupe has dismissed Nelson Chamisa’s appointment as the new leader of the MDC-T party saying that the process was unprocedural. Khupe is arguing that she is still the rightful acting president and insisted that the National Council meeting which elected Chamisa, does not have the constitutional mandate to elect leaders. She also dismissed Chamisa’s 7-day ultimatum insisting that the National Council cannot issue ultimatums to her. Speaking to News Day, Khupe said:

The national council cannot give me an ultimatum. It does not have the power to do that. I can only be given an ultimatum by Congress. The national council does not and has no power to elect leaders.

I was elected at Congress in 2014 along with our late leader, Morgan Tsvangirai. That means, in his absence, I should be acting president. Chamisa and (Elias) Mudzuri were appointed by president Tsvangirai.

…The so-called national council meetings that are being bandied about were un-procedural and I do not recognise any of their resolutions. Constitutionally I am the acting president of the MDC-T.

  1. Its too late for Khupe to say all this. Can someone tell me at the 2014 Congress were khupe and other leaders elected or endorsed . Is endorsement an election what’s the difference in these two phrases. I also believe that a congress resolution can not be changed by anyone accept the congress itself. I want to believe that THE LATE DR Richard MT was mandated to do such appointments and also the Provinces agreed with what the President had done to appoint the two Vice Presidents
