The Herald reports that one of MDC-T’s vice presidents Engineer Elias Mudzuri was barred from convening a press conference the party’s Harvest House headquarters yesterday.
This comes as Mudzuri and his colleague Nelson Chamisa are both claiming to be acting president of MDC-T as the party’s leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, battles colon cancer in South Africa. Journalists waited for over an hour for Mudzuri to deliver his press statement until they were dispersed after being advised by party officials to pick the statement at Mudzuri’s Milton Park residence, where he was reportedly locked in meetings with the party’s “elders”.
When asked by The Herald why Mudzuri had changed the venue of the press conference at the last minute, MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu declined to comment. However, sources within MDC-T yesterday said Mudzuri was forced to change the venue because Chamisa has now captured Harvest House. The challenges confronting the party, sources said, were likely to be discussed tomorrow during the national council meeting that has been called by Chamisa. The sources also claim Chamisa held a party caucus with MPs last week where he threatened them that only those loyal to him will not be challenged during primary elections.
