Former Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo was on Thursday last week remanded to March for trial when he appeared before a Harare magistrate. Chombo stands accused of contravening the Prevention of Corruption Act and will return to court on March 8.
He was remanded together with former Zanu-PF youth leaders Kudzai Chipanga and Munyaradzi Hamandishe who are facing different charges. Through his lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, Chombo notified the court that he would challenge his placement on remand at the next hearing. The former Zanu PF politician is out of custody on $5,000 bail and reporting once a week at Malbrough Police Station.
The State claims Chombo fleeced land developer Eddies Pfugari Limited of his White Cliff Farm after he allocated residential stands to illegal settlers on the land. Chombo then invited Eddies Pfugari to his office and told himthat he would use his authority as ministerto remove the illegal settlers if he was rewarded with a piece of land in Norton where Pfugari was selling stands. Desperate to have the illegal settlers cleared, Eddies Pfugari is said to have given Chombo 3,712 acres of land valued at $310,000.

Since agricultural land no longer has title (and therefore no exchange value), this most likely is peri-urban land ear-marked for residential stands. Fifteen million square metres of unserviced residential land can be sold at $2 per square metre, giving a turn-over of $30-million, and a profit of $29690000. Not bad for land bought for 310 000.
