Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu was convicted when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Amanda Muridzo on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to failing to pay maintenance for the two children he sired with his ex-wife Marygold Mutemasango. Chimbetu has maintenance arrears amounting to $4 400.
He was sentenced to five months in prison which was wholly suspended on condition he paid $300 on Wednesday, while the remaining debt would have to be settled on or before February 15. It is the State’s case that on December 19, 2016, the Harare Civil Court ordered Sulu to pay $800 maintenance for his two children, but he defaulted for the period between May and October last year. He only paid $400 in two installments on August 2 and September last year which resulted in his arrears rising to $4 400.
