Zanu-PF Cancels Mnangagwa Welcome Rally, Youth Leader Warned Against Adopting Chipanga's Methods

Zanu-PF has cancelled a welcome rally for President Emmerson Mnangagwa which was scheduled to take place at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport today, where he is expected to arrive today after attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland and the African Union (AU) summit in Ethiopia.

The decision to cancel the rally was announced by Zanu-PF Harare provincial youth leader, Godwin Gomwe who did not give reasons. Said Gomwe:

Please be advised that we will no longer be going to the airport to welcome His Excellency, Cde ED Mnangagwa. I extend an apology to the multitudes that had mobilised to welcome our President.

Online publication, 263Chat reports that a cross section of Zimbabwean youths whom they interviewed expressed displeasure and accused Gomwe of adopting his predecessor Kudzai Chipanga’s methods of busing people to attend petty events while wasting time. Said Tapiwa Chibaya a University of Zimbabwe student:

Before  ED went to Davos, he  said he is a simple person who doesn’t want all these so called solidarity  rallies, so what is happening now? We all love our president but let’s not forget  what Mugabe’s regime did, they will be humiliated after being asked what the solidarity is all about and fail to answer like what they did about the Afri Forum march last year.

Omega Chindori, a Sunningdale resident said the money being used to organise the welcome rally can be channelled towards a national cause such as cloud seeding at a time when the country is not receiving enough rain. Said Chindori:

History is repeating itself ,corruption is a cancer as you know, some might be be benefiting out of this like Kudzai Chipanga used to. He would organise those events such that he  would be granted some allowances. In this new dispensation we are saying no to that, lets focus on building the economy not destroying it again. We know ED  has done much as far as nourishing the face of Zimbabwe  lets give him time to implement than to start having  some unnecessary budgets . Remember there will be a need for t shirts ,caps and food . Its a lot of money which may be  channeled along meaningful things like cloud seeding at a time we are not receiving any rains.
