Obert Gutu Defies Tsvangirai, Vows To Take On Tendai Biti

MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu is reported to have gone against the principles and the pact of the coalition MDC Alliance. In a blatant disregard for party leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s directive to reserve the Harare East seat for Tendai Biti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Gutu has declared that he will stand his ground and run for the seat.

Writing on microblogging site Twitter, Gutu declared

I am a Democrat to the bare bones. I’m not going to buckle! Never! Ever! The people shall decide! There will definitely be a challenge! Trust me! I’m not backing down!

This comes a few days after Guutu told MDC Alliance spokesperson Welshman Ncube to shut up and mind his own business over the very same issue. Said Gutu:

He should learn to mind his own business. Last time I checked he was not in the MDC. Ncube is not a member of the MDC-T. He should mind the affairs of his little party and leave us alone. The MDC Alliance is not a political party. Ncube has got absolutely no locus standi (legal standing) to instruct the MDC-T what to do with its members. He should simply shut up.

Sources at the MDC-T suggest that some of Tsvangirai’s lieutenants who include Gutu, Douglas Mwonzora and Thokozani Khupe want out of the MDC Alliance.
