Zanu-PF MPs Want Elections Postponed, Afraid Of Losing Seats To Soldiers

Despite President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s declaration that elections will be held on schedule, members of parliament from his Zanu-PF party are reported to be in favour of postponing the 2018 elections. The legislators want the elections to be delayed by at least 3 years as they are afraid that they will lose their seats to soldiers who have been allowed to contest the elections under the Zanu-PF ticket.

A number of military generals moved into politics after the ascension of Emmerson Mnangagwa to the presidency and will have run to get their own political seats, posing a direct threat to sitting Zanu-PF legislators. Zanu-PF national political commissar, Lieutenant General (retired) Engelbert Rugeje is reported to have said that soldiers are free to represent Zanu-PF in the coming elections.

Some of the MPs are afraid of losing their seats to the oppositions and are considering engaging parliament to amend the constitution with the help of legislators from the other side.Mnangagwa, on the other hand, wants elections to go ahead in order to gain legitimacy.

An MP who spoke to The Standard said:

There is confusion and chaos in constituencies and the party is afraid it will lose more seats if elections were held this year.

Zanu PF MPs want harmonised elections to be postponed so that it [the party] has more time to deal with its post-transitional period before elections can be held. The Zanu PF MPs also feel that since the central committee was given a five-year fresh term, they should also have the elections postponed by three years.
