“Remove Maths As Part Of College Entry Requirements”: Higher Education Minister

Higher Education Minister Professor Amon Murwira has called on tertiary institutions to scrap Mathematics as a requirement for students to study programmes which do not require calculations.

Addressing academics at Bulawayo Polytechnic in Bulawayo on Thursday, Prof Murwira said Mathematics cannot be a requirement for all programmes. He also said entry requirements must be subject specific. Said Prof Murwira:

If a subject or if a qualification really requires people to calculate. I think Mathematics is important isn’t it? But you can’t say we want English and Mathematics where even you don’t need to calculate.  There is this inflexibility sometimes that is introduced. I think universities, polytechnics and colleges are some of the most conservative institutions. Let’s be more flexible concerning this, when you see it’s needed yes it’s needed. It cannot be a general entry qualification. Because sometimes you say English but the person is going to make some brick making machines, I think it’s about us being flexible on that one. We want to give academic freedom to our institutions, it means you look at your logic, and don’t be a slave of your regulation because you made it, make another one. That’s what I mean when I say owning the country; you can’t be a slave of a regulation.

  1. I really think that what the minister is saying its great because some of us want to study law so what do we need mathematics for

    1. So that you can run the financial aspect of the business successfully. You need maths and accounting otherwise you end up dipping into the clients money 💰

    1. Uku kwaa kupererwa uku. Just like English, Maths is a basic need especially if u want to go higher with yo tertiary education. People who disregard English and Maths have a very limited vision. We are only having this discussion because someone has taught us the basics kare. Imagine the generations dzichakura dzichinzi English and Maths and unnecessary, munoishaya Zimbabwe iyi.

  2. Mathematics is requirement Mr Professor Mathematics help you to live calculated .Verengai masamhu ayo .Kwete kubvisa munochepesa Nyika yedu

  3. I always read many directives and suggestions coming from the current ministaers and advisors, this one is one which makes so much sense to me. Unfortunately it seems its a general comment and how one wonders when shall it be put into practice. I wish this was a directive with a timeline of when to be implimented.

Thank you Minister for a positive comment.
I was talking to one South African friend of mine who is a Medical Doctor and he said to me “I spent whole year staudying maths in one Instituition but as a medical Doctor one does not need Maths probably all I needed was Matric Arrithimatic”.

  4. Thats silly. Mathematics is a life skill and thinking that its only about adding and subtracting is so foolish on the part of the minister

  5. Mashura chaiyoo nyika inoendepi vachitaura nyaya dzakapusa k we want to stematize Zim vodzokera kumashure kudai toendepi

  6. kusaita compulsory for tertiary admission ndo Zvakashata the big question is WHY ndadaro
    BECAUSE

Margin yevanhu vemascience to arts inoramba ichidzika because students will overlook it vachiti its not compulsory dwhich is not good….

Since key sectors dzounza mari yakawanda mueconomy
Is ENGINEERING and PRODUCTION which requires more math

Which is contrary to what is offered me arts and social science…

  7. this so called new dispensation government must stop dishing out populist statements. if you really sit down and analyse you will find out that maths is present in every facet of your life. we should be discussing means and ways of improving the pass rate not this nonsense. how did this guy become a professor????? thinking yavo ma 1

    1. True, someone here is saying I want to do Law so I don’t need Maths, how can I make you a Lawyer for my Business when you don’t how to to calculate how do you advise me on Business when you don’t know Maths.

  8. Maths is everything, what’s wrong with dis minister? If someone doesnt have maths it means he or she is not ready for tertiary education.

  9. This is a strategy to make money. Apa Government ichaita Mari coz vana vachazara Kuma universities and they will pay from their pockets, though their degree will be rubbish coz munhu usina maths haana order, plus akapusa, anobirwa at any time. that’s a reality. Soo if Zimbabweans allow such thing to happen, mucharamba muchingodzidza, ma doctrate hobho pamunhu, muchikanganwa kutsvaga Mari, coz munhu haadi kufananidzwa nedofo risina Maths, mese muchinzi mune degree rakafanana. That’s rubbish, it devalue our degrees. Commercials hatidi zvakadaro we still need our degrees to have value. Pliz vabereki you need to see the future of this move. It’s rubbish.

  10. Perfect. Magona Minister kana kutongobvisa form 4 yacho nekuti kune kumwe kwaisina basa. Rambai muchibvisa.

  11. That is forward thinking sir it will help empower a lot of people who are failing to reach their dreams
