Election Resource Centre (ERC) has called on Government to publicise the reasons why former Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) chairperson Rita Makarau resigned following the resignation of Robert Mugabe as Zimbabwe’s president.
ERC chairperson Trust Maanda said Government must disclose Makarau’s reasons for leaving office to clear perceptions that she was forced to do so. Said Maanda:
We need to know that she resigned either because there was conflict of interest with her other appointments or she decided on professional grounds or her own personal reasons so we know that that office was vacated properly and it is going to be filled in properly. If somebody is removed unlawfully, obviously the person who will come to fill that office might be perceived as having been imposed. That information will allay any perceptions that she was forced out.
