Walter Mzembi Reaffirms Support For Mnangagwa Despite Being Expelled From Zanu-PF

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Walter Mzembi has pledged his support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his new administration. This comes after Mzembi was recalled from parliament after being expelled from the ruling Zanu-PF party. Mzembi was expelled together with other ministers and officials alleged to belong to the G40 Faction of Zanu-PF when former president Robert Mugabe fell in November. The former minister was in the latest group of 11 legislators who were expelled this week. Despite this, Mzembi vowed that he would continue to support President Mnangagwa as a private citizen. In a statement Mzembi said:

I remain a loyal member of the Party and whilst expulsion is an administrative exercise in pursuit of reasserting discipline in the Party my heart and soul remains embedded in the ideals, principles and ideological construct of Zanu PF, and I will serve its interests in other roles, most of all as a private citizen going forward into the future .

May I take this opportunity to reaffirm my loyalties to the President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Comrade E.D Mnangagwa, the Party and Government, and reassure him of my continued support.

The struggle ahead of us now is that of economic emancipation and development and in my new found role as a private citizen I will add my hands on the deck to achieve a prosperous life for all Zimbabweans in line with the aspirations of the President.

Mzembi is currently out on $400 bail. He is facing charges of criminal abuse of office over allegations of donating television sets bought by the government for the 2010 World Cup. Mzembi allegedly donated two television screens to the United Family International Church led by Emmanuel Makandiwa, one television screen to Walter Magaya’s Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries and another to Zion Christian Church Bishop Nehemia Mutendi in Masvingo.
