I Will Make The Hard Decisions, Not Populist Decisions Says Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that he was going to abandon the populist approach and instead make the hard decisions that would allow the country to develop and progress. Mnangagwa said that only people who wanted to hold on to power make populist policies regardless of their impact on the country. The president emphasized that he was focusing on building a legacy, and as such he was going to make hard decisions which will benefit the country in the long term.

Speaking at a meeting with Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) chairman Trevor Ncube and senior management at his Munhumutupa offices, Mnangagwa said:

As a leader, you don’t have to take the nation where they want to go, but to where they ought to go. If you want to remain in power, you will do what people want even if it’s not good (for the country). But if you want to leave a legacy, then you have to make tough and hard decisions which will change their lives.

Mnangagwa also stressed that for the country to move on, people needed to forgive each other and let bygones be bygones. He reminded the media of the treatment that he had received when he was fired from government and Zanu-PF by former president Robert Mugabe.

Said Mnangagwa:

…The independent Press should also do its work. It will be a sad day for democracy and the country if everyone was singing the same song.

Some of the ways you slaughtered me in the newspapers, it is inconceivable that I would be sitting with you right now. I don’t live in the past. I live for now and tomorrow, so let bygones be bygones. Let’s work together to better our nation.
