Mnangagwa Declares Zanu-PF Youth Leader Who Booed Grace Mugabe A Liberation Hero

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred a liberation hero status on the late Zanu-PF youth leader Magura Charumbira who died in a car accident on Monday. This comes after Zanu-PF Bulawayo recommended he be awarded a liberation hero.

In a letter to Zanu-PF Bulawayo Province chairperson Christopher Sibanda, Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Obert Mpofu said Charumbira had been given a Government assisted funeral and that his dependents will be paid. The letter reads:

His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU (PF). Cde ED. Mnangagwa has conferred a Liberation Hero status to the late Cde Magura Charumbira who died on 8 January 2018 at Norton. The family can be contacted through our Bulawayo Provincial office.

We shall be most grateful if you would make the usual arrangements tor his burial and payment of benefits to his dependents. He is from Masvingo Province.

Charumbira died on Monday at the 56km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway near the Norton tollgate after a Mercedes Benz in which he was a passenger crashed into a stationary haulage truck. The driver of the Mercedes Benz and other passengers survived the crash.

Charumbira is knowing for leading a group of Zanu-PF Youths that heckled and booed former first lady Grace Mugabe at a Youth Interface Rally in November last year. His actions indirectly accelerated the events which led to the downfall of Mugabe and the ascendancy of Mnangagwa after Mugabe made good on his threat to fire Mnangagwa.  This resulted in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces launching Operation Restore Legacy less than two weeks later.
