Former Minister of State for Midlands Province and Gokwe Senator Jason Machaya was yesterday freed on $1 000 bail by Gweru Magistrate Mildred Matuvi.
Machaya is facing criminal abuse of office charges after he was arrested on Friday on fresh charges. He spent last Friday in detention at Mtapa Police Station before he appeared before Matuvi who deferred his matter to yesterday. As part of bail conditions Machaya wiull report twice at Kwekwe Central Police Station and remain at his given Sherwood Farm address. He was also ordered not to visit his former workplace at Gweru Government Complex.
The State alleges Machaya allocated 17 799 stands to land developers in Gweru while he did not have the powers or any lawful responsibility to do so. This was supposed to be done by the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.
