The Daily News reports that there are indications that MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai is grooming one of his Vice Presidents Nelson Chamisa as his successor. This comes after Tsvangirai gave Chamisa the task of leading MDC-T’s selection process of parliamentary and council candidates for this year’s harmonised elections.
Tsvangirai has also chosen Chamisa to stand in for him and to handle all the party’s business within the MDC Alliance in most cases as he battles colon cancer. Sources who spoke to the Daily News said Chamisa was invited by Tsvangirai in the absence of Thokozani Khupe and Elias Mudzuri who are the other MDC-T Vice Presidents, and given the task to lead the selection process of parliamentary and council candidates for this year’s harmonised elections.
MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora confirmed that Chamisa will be leading the process while Tsvangirai is in South Africa for treatment. Said Mwonzora:
We are going to meet with VP Chamisa on Tuesday to deliberate on the issue of candidates’ selection. The selection will be done according to the key MDC statutes and after that meeting with the VP, we will convene a national directorate meeting that will be chaired by the national chairperson Lovemore Moyo to approve the selected candidates.
MDC Alliance spokesperson Welshman Ncube said Chamisa will represent Tsvangirai during the coalition’s campaign rallies.
