Grace Faces Arrest Over Corruption Allegations, Only Robert Mugabe Has Immunity Says ZACC

Former first lady Grace Mugabe is reported to be in danger of imminent arrest over corruption-related charges. Grace and officials from the University of Zimbabwe are already under investigation by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) over her PhD which she received in 2014 under questionable circumstances. Grace stands at risk as the immunity agreement which was signed by her husband, former president Robert Mugabe, as one of the conditions for him to step down in November, does not extend to the rest of his family.

ZACC commissioner responsible for investigations, Goodson Nguni yesterday told The Standard:

Yes, we have received a report from the lectures from the Sociology Department on how she got her doctorate and because that is a legitimate complaint, there are investigators looking at it.

First of all, in terms of the law and Constitution, the president of Zimbabwe has got immunity from certain actions during his term of office and upon retirement.

Now according to the Constitution, the rest of the first family do not have immunity from prosecution and we are going to follow the law. So if there is evidence that a member of the former first family killed somebody, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, because that’s outside of our mandate, will investigate and make an arrest.

If there is an allegation against a member of the former first family, not the president, we will investigate that and take the matter to the National Prosecuting Authority. Remember we don’t take matters to the courts, it’s the National Prosecution Authority which does that.

Nguni did not reveal the specific cases Grace is being investigated for. The revelations do not augur well for the former first family, with other reports saying that Grace’s sons Chatunga Bellarmine, Robert Jr and Russell Goreraza together with Bona’s husband Simba Chikore are also in imminent danger of arrest over multiple allegations which include, abuse of office, illegal gold trading and murder.
