According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) National Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba 136 people died in 1398 separate road traffic accidents recorded from 15 December 2017 to 1 January 2018.
Charamba said the death toll increased by 47 people from 89 deaths that were recorded during the same period last year. Said Charamba:
A total of 1398 accidents were recorded this year compared to 1396 last year. 136 people died this year compared to 89 last year. 755 people were injured compared to 565 last year. There were 99 fatal road accidents compared to 82 last year.
While full statistics are yet to be compiled, December 22 recorded the highest number of fatalities with 19 deaths. The number of pedestrians who were killed during the period 21 to 27 December 2017, was 27 compared to 12 recorded last year. Charamba said 14 murder cases were recorded in one week, with 10 of the cases involving couples.
