Generals Want Mnangagwa To Run For Maximum Of Two Terms

Generals from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces are reported to be keen on the presidents of the country to serve a maximum of two terms only, starting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa. According to Reuters, the generals want Mnangagwa to serve for two terms before handing power over to former Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) commander and current Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. Chiwenga, in turn, is supposed to be in power for only two terms before handing power over to another general.

The generals want to avoid the spectre of another long-term president like Mnangagwa’s predecessor, former president Robert Mugabe who ruled the country for 37 years until he was forced to step down in November following a military intervention by the ZDF.

Intelligence reports quoted by Reuters say:

The generals want Mnangagwa to run for one or two terms before handing over to Chiwenga. They want Chiwenga to be in power for two terms before handing over to the next general to be announced.
