The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that at least 42 people died, while more than 50 others were injured in 182 road traffic accidents that were recorded countrywide on Unity Day and between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day holidays.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said they are still compiling statistics for the other days. On Unity Day, 15 people died countrywide in 13 road traffic accidents, while on Christmas Eve, 12 people died in 90 separate road accidents. On Boxing Day, 15 people died, while 34 others were injured in 79 road traffic accidents that were recorded countrywide.
Charamba also said an unknown motorist ran over a pedestrian along the Harare-Mutare Road near Genje Business Centre in Ruwa and sped off. She appealed to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the driver to report to the nearest police station.
