Mnangagwa, Dabengwa Plotted To Challenge Mugabe In 2018

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa planned to challenge Robert Mugabe in the 2018 elections by reviving the Patriotic Front.

The project was the brainchild of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) and the Zipra-Veterans Association. NewsDay could not verify if Mnangagwa was personally involved but Dabengwa confirmed the plans in an interview with the publication. Said Dabengwa:

It is not true that the offer came from President Mnangagwa. It came, but from people in the region who wanted to persuade me to join the government. The initial discussions were between the Zipra veterans and Mutsvangwa as well as Matemadanda, whose understanding was that a post-Mugabe scenario would mean a return to the Patriotic Front. I had placed a condition to Mutsvangwa that I would never work under the Unity Accord because as far as I am concerned, that document is null and void.

When asked by NewsDay if Mnangagwa was to be the leader of the post-Mugabe scenario, Dabengwa said:

Not really as clear as that, but that was the understanding. If Mugabe was to stick to the idea of standing in the 2018 election, he would have to be challenged and the ZNLWVA was to leave him with the G40 faction. Mnangagwa, indeed, was to be part of the walkout. But this plan was overtaken by events after the military intervention in November. Things moved so fast for all of us. We did not expect it.
