Angela Gwatiringa, who was employed by a local ferrochrome smelting company, Xin Yu Mining Corporation, as a control room assistant, claims she was fired after she requested for maternity leave.
Said Gwatiringa:
I indicated to the company’s human resources manager, Mr Kudakwashe Chitakure that I needed some leave days because I was feeling heavy. When he approached the company directors they gave him the directive to fire me and the following day I was handed a dismissal letter.
She said she had since approached the National Employment Council after she could not resolve the issue with Xin Yu’s management. Speaking to The Chronicle, Xin Yu’s Human Resources manager, Mr Chitakure confirmed that they fired Gwatiringa but denied claims she was fired because she was pregnant. Said Chitakure:
Her job was technical, she was working in a control room and there were concerns that she was not doing her job properly. The dismissal was based on incompetence. I was not even aware that she was pregnant, so the allegations I think are coming from the fact that she is disappointed.

If it’s an issue of incompetence, did she go for hearing. Management can’t just hand someone a dismissal letter. Please!
Exactly, pull the other one, please don’t bring Asian labour laws to zimvs
That HR Manager is tarnishing the image of HR proffessionals pliz realign yourself and do the right thing. You are there to advise on HR related issues which is specialist area not just to follow orders like you did. You are a misplaced beacon and HR might not be your calling.ĺ
Probably he is not a qualified HR and doesn’t know the fundamentals of HR. With some Chinese companies they employ unqualified personnel in order to underpay. To the affected lady, u stl have a legal way to solve your issue so don’t give up. Hopefully u have all your paper work.
Why not redeploy her to onother job within the company. It seems as if the HR have personal issues with her. Workers must continuously go for training

The Xin Yu defines it’s name that it’s an exploiting company. Our new government must deal harshly with such companies.Or maybe there are no Labour laws in our sovereign state. If it is her incompetent issue, redeploy her to another department.

Many workers are being abused in these Chinese owned entities. Relevant authorities should do the right thing & investigate many hidden unreported cases&incidences of wanton workers rights violations by many Chinese employers.
We need a hotline and easily accessible platforms to whistle blow, report and seek justice.
