Former Minister of Finance Ignatius Chombo will have to bear another night in Remand Prison after the High Court postponed his bail application to Thursday. The matter will be heard tomorrow after the State applied for a postponement saying that it was not yet ready to proceed. However, the court ordered the State to file its papers by 4 pm today.
Chombo’s lawyer, Professor Lovemore Madhuku said:
The State applied again for a postponement to tomorrow same time (9 am). They are still working on their response. We consented to the postponement to tomorrow,
The former minister is facing charges of fraud, criminal abuse of office and contravening the Prevention of Corruption Act. His lawyer, Madhuku, accused Harare Magistrate Elisha Singano
of being biased against his client after Singano denied Chombo bail saying that he was a flight risk who needed to be incarcerated for his own safety. Madhuku then applied for bail at the High Court, which deferred the hearing to today to allow the prosecution to file its response.
