The opposition MDC-T party has spoken out against the seemingly selective arrests and prosecutions which it says go against human rights and do not benefit the country. The MDC-T is concerned that all the arrests in the aftermath of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces’ Operation Restore Legacy, are seemingly targeting the G40 Faction, with no official linked to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s own Team Lacoste Faction yet to be arrested. The opposition argues that officials from both factions are equally corrupt. The MDC-T also called on Mnangagwa’s government to arrest known perpetrators of political violence with the same boldness that they are using to pursue G40 members.
Speaking to online publication, New Zimbabwe, MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora said:
It appears as if the current crackdown on criminals is targeted at G40 members only. We have not seen a single member of the Lacoste faction being arrested.
It is known that all Zanu PF bigwigs from both factions have been involved in corrupt activities. Human rights wise, the selectivity of the law will not be in the interest of the country.
Like what they are doing to alleged G40 criminals, our hope is that the new government should also show the same temerity in arresting known thugs people who brutalised and murdered our supporters.
So far only three people have appeared in court and all three are aligned to the G40 Faction. These are former Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo and former Zanu-PF Youth leaders Kudzanai Chipanga and Innocent Hamandishe.
