Coltart Calls For Govt To Drop "Attempting to Overthrow A Govt" Charges Against Pastor Evan

Former Minister of Education, David Coltart has called on President Mnangagwa’s administration and Prosecutor-General Ray Goba to drop the charges against Pastor Evan Mawarire. Mawarire is facing two counts of attempting to overthrow the government of former President Robert Mugabe after he organised demonstrations against the government, including one in New York. Coltart pointed out the irony of the charge aginst Mawarire when the Zimbabwe Defence Forces had actually seized power in a military takeover which resulted in the resignation of Mugabe.

Writing on his Facebook Page, Coltart said:

It is utterly farcical that Pastor Evan Mawarire should be back in court this morning charged with attempting to overthrow “a constitutionally elected government”. Aside from the fact that the 2013 elections seriously breached both the electoral laws and the Constitution, given the fact that President Mnangagwa now holds office thanks to a coup illegally and unconstitutionally done by the military, it is comical that his government should still be pressing these charges against Pastor Evan.

The record shows that at worst Pastor Evan exercised his constitutional rights to express his objection to the very same things done by the Mugabe regime (such as corruption, abuse of office etc) which caused the military to effectively overthrow President Mugabe – acts which were in violation of sections 208 and 213 of the Constitution.

I hope that sense prevails and the Prosecutor-General (who has now taken office again ironically courtesy of legal proceedings brought by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights) moves quickly to drop these charges.
If someone wrote a fictional story based on the events of the last few weeks in Zimbabwe readers would think the plot outlandish! Generals overthrow a President in a “non coup” and are lauded as heroes. A Pastor who simply complains about massive corruption perpetrated by the same people now overthrown still faces prosecution, at the behest of a Prosecutor-General who owes his reinstatement to a human rights organisation which supports the very person he is still prosecuting!
