Grace Wants $1billion RGM University Project To Proceed As Planned To Preserve Mugabe's Legacy

Former First Lady Grace Mugabe is reported to have pleaded with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s new administration to proceed with the building of the USD1 billion Robert Gabriel Mugabe University. Grace who is intent on protecting Mugabe’s legacy is reported to have insisted that all streets and structures named after Mugabe should not be renamed. She also pleaded with the mediators to make sure that the new government did not reverse the proposed grants for the university.  She also pleaded with the new government to let her family keep its farms, reported to be at least 10.  The government has confirmed that the Mugabe family’s assets would be protected.

The Robert Gabriel Mugabe University project was proposed by Minister of Higher Education, Professor Jonathan Moyo and approved by cabinet in August 2017 and is supposed to be built in Mazowe. The Responsible Authority of the University is the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Foundation, whose Founding Trustees are former President Robert Mugabe and former First Lady, Grace Mugabe.

However, the new government has not made any decision as yet on Grace’s proposals. A source who spoke to South African publication, the Sunday Times said:

It is too early to tell whether the new government will fully agree on some of her proposals
