Mugabe Granted Immunity After Insisting That He Wants To Die In Zim, Has No Plans To Live In Exile: Sources

Former President Robert Mugabe is reported to have been granted immunity from prosecution. Mugabe was also guaranteed of his family’s safety in the deal that led to his resignation on Tuesday. Mugabe is reported to have insisted on assurances of his safety as he had no plans to leave the country to go into exile.

A source who did not have the authority to publicly speak on the negotiations told Reuters:

It was very emotional for him and he was forceful about it.

For him, it was very important that he be guaranteed security to stay in the country…although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to or has to.

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces seized power after launching “Operation Restore Legacy” last week. Mugabe will be replaced by his former aide, former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa who will be sworn in on Friday.
