"What we have removed is only one man we have not removed the system": MDC comments on Mugabe's resignation

Speaking to ENCA journalist Vuyo Mvoko, MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora commented on Robert Mugabe’s resignation as President of Zimbabwe. He said that there is more to be done as they have only removed one man and not the system.

Said Mwonzora:

It’s a great day. Mugabe is gone. But having said that the MDC is very clear that what we have removed is only one man. We have not removed the system. And therefore the MDC is calling for a transitional mechanism to deal with two things; to arrest the economic decline and number two to deal with free and fair elections. We have to get rid of all forms of violence and intimidation in the elections. And most importantly the army, it has done a good job and it must go back to the barracks. It must not have a role to play in the elections except for maintenance of peace. So we need conditions for free and fair elections in this country, so that the people choose the leader that they want. But right now we have removed Robert Mugabe and a few of his cabal but the whole system still remains. The attitude of Zanu-PF is going to be important. We don’t know what they’re thinking but what is important to us is that we must have conditions for free and fair elections in our country.
