The First Secretary of Zanu-PF and president-designate of the Republic of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to land in the country at around midday. Mnangagwa is expected to succeed former president Robert Mugabe who resigned as head of state on Tuesday.
He expected to land at Manyame Airbase, which is adjacent to the newly renamed Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Mnangagwa fled into exile after he was fired from the government and from Zanu-PF by Mugabe almost a fortnight ago. However, Mugabe was forced to resign when he lost support from all quarters starting with the military, then Zanu-PF and finally parliament. When Mugabe sent his letter of resignation, the Senate and the House of Assembly were in a joint sitting to impeach Mugabe.
Activist Acie Lumumba, real name William Mutumanje, has advised that there is free transport available for those who are free “to welcome the leader of this new dispensation” at Engen Service Station.
