10 Things We Noted From Emmerson Mnangagwa's First Speech After Returning To The Country

Zanu-PF President and president-designate of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, addressed the country for at Zanu-PF Headquarters today. This was Mnangagwa’s first speech after he made a triumphant return to the country after almost a fortnight in exile when he fled the country after he was fired by former President Robert Mugabe.

Here are 10 Things we noted from Mnangagwa’s speech:

1. Mnangagwa stated that he had been indeed poisoned on the 12th of August at a Youth Interface Rally in Gwanda. This used to be a sour point for former first lady Grace Mugabe, who disputed that Mnangagwa had been poisoned at all.

2. Mnangagwa also said that 16 daysa go, he fled the country and went into exile because within two hours of him getting the letter dismissing him, he was informed that his life was in danger as there were plans to eliminate him. Mnangagwa also said that the G40 had “captured” the executive.

3. Mnangagwa thanked the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) for the role they had played and commended the Commander of the ZDF, General Constantino Chiwenga. Mnangagwa revealed that he been in constant touch with the commanders of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

4. Mnangagwa said that other heads of State such as Jakaya Kikwete and Jacob Zuma had hailed the people of Zimbabwe for the peace and discipline they had displayed from the time the Zimbabwe Defence Forces had launched Operation Restore Legacy. He said that SADC was proud of the manner in which the people of Zimbabwe had conducted themselves.

5. Mnangagwa praised Zanu-PF for the work that it had done in ensuring that former President Robert Mugabe  left power through constitutional means. He added:

“He is now the former president of Zimbabwe”

7. Mnangagwa pledged that he would be a servant of the people and appealed to genuine Zimbabweans to work together in order to grow the economy and create jobs in a peaceful environment.

8. Mnangagwa revealed that he was willing to work with the international community saying that Zimbabwe needed the cooperation of its neighbours, the continent and the world.

 

9. Referring to former first lady, Grace Mugabe, Mnangagwa said that a lot of lies were told and said that she had threated to crush the head of the snake. He then asked a rhetoric question: Whose head had been crushed? He adds that God protected him.

10. Mnangagwa also repeated what may soon become his signature chant. Translated into English, the chant says Zanu-PF will continue ruling no matter what, while those who oppose it will continue barking.
