The press statement released on Monday evening by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) shows that the military is against President Robert Mugabe’s impeachment because they need him as President of Zimbabwe for their plan to succeed. ZDF announced that President Robert Mugabe has began processes towards a definitive solution and roadmap for the country.
The army needs Mugabe to reappoint former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa whom they say he is scheduled to meet “shortly” for talks to map the way forward. Said Chiwenga:
Following the address to the Nation by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces last night, we have made further consultations with the President to agree on a Roadmap on the prevailing situation in the country. The Zimbabwe Defence and Security Services are encouraged by new developments which include contact between the President and the former Vice President, Cde ED Mnangagwa. who is expected in the country shortly.
If Zanu-PF is successful in impeaching Mugabe, then the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF)’s plan to have Mnangagwa reinstated and running the country will not work unless President Mugabe has already signed an agreement stating that Mnangagwa has been reinstated as first Vice President which will leave him as the next President according to the Constitution.
