Possible players in post-Mugabe Government

There are reports that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and President Robert Mugabe are involved in talks for him to resign and give power to former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Here are the possible Government players in a post-Mugabe Government.

• EMMERSON MNANGAGWA (LIKELY PRESIDENT) – He is being taunted as the one that will lead the transitional Government. Before his ouster on 6 November, Mnangagwa was the firm favourite to succeed President Robert Mugabe. His ties with the military are believed to have influenced the decision for the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to take action.
• MORGAN TSVANGIRAI (LIKELY PRIME MINISTER) – He has been at the helm of the main opposition party MDC-T. Tsvangirai served as prime minister in the Government of National Unity which lasted from 2009-2013 after the disputed 2008 elections. Tsvangirai has been undergoing treatment for cancer outside Zimbabwe but returned to Harare late on Wednesday.
• CONSTANTINO CHIWENGA (POSSIBLE VICE-PRESIDENT) – He is expected to be offered a senior role in the Government considering his involvement in the military intervention. Chiwenga is also a known ally of former Vice President Mnangagwa.
• JOICE MUJURU (POSSIBLE VICE-PRESIDENT) – She formed her own political party after being ousted as vice-president in 2014 and replaced by Mnangagwa. Mujuru is regarded as one of the influential opposition politicians.
• DUMISO DABENGWA (POSSIBLE VICE-PRESIDENT) – His incorporation in any unity government would ensure it represents both wings of the liberation struggle which are ZIPRA and ZANLA.
• TENDAI BITI (POSSIBLE FINANCE MINISTER) – His exploits as Finance Minister during the Government of National Unity are celebrated in and outside Zimbabwe. He told Reuters he would be happy to reprise this role if Tsvangirai, his former political mentor, was on board.
