The military has reassured us this is not a coup d‘etat says the African Union

Head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat who is on a visit to the United States said that the Zimbabwe Military has reassured the African Union that there is no coup d’etat in the country. This comes after the military seized power from President Robert Mugabe saying that they want to target a number of ministers and senior ZANU PF officials over allegations of “committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country.” They say they want to bring them to justice.  On Wednesday, South African president Jacob Zuma confirmed that he had talked to Mugabe and had been reassured that he is fine although he is under house arrest.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, who is on a visit to Washington D.C. for talks with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson admitted that he is yet to talk to Mugabe although he did say:

The military have (sic) reassured us this is not a coup d’etat. The African Union is against any unconstitutional change of government.

This may be bad news for Mugabe, as it could mean that the African Union won’t take any action against the military for usurping Mugabe’s power.
