Martha O’Donovan to Return To Chikurubi after High Court Postpones Bail Hearing

United States citizen Martha O’Donovan (25) will have to brave another night at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison after the High Court postponed her bail application. The state applied for a postponement saying that they were not yet ready to proceed as they needed to prepare their argument. High Court judge Justice Nyaradzo Munangati-Manongwa granted the application. The bail hearing will now take place tomorrow morning at 9 am.

O’Donovan is accused of plotting to overthrow President Mugabe’s government using Twitter. The charges she is facing are:

  • Subverting a constitutional government through Masterminding a social media campaign to overthrow the government by unconstitutional means, with the campaign allegedly being run under the social media accounts; @Matigary, @OpenparlyZim and Magamba Network Trust.
  • Undermining the authority of and insulting the authority of the president by tweeting as @Matigary a tweet that read “We’re being led by a selfish and sick man”.
