Govt introduces price controls on 16 products "to protect consumers"

Minister of Industry and Commerce Mike Bimha has announced that with immediate effect, the government has placed 16 commodities under a “pricing and availability monitoring list.” According to Minister Bimha, this is meant to protect customers from the rampant illegal price increases. Bimha added that the government was working on policies to stabilise prices.

The 16 products which have been placed on the list are:

  • Cooking oil
  • Mealie meal
  • Bread
  • Flour
  • Sugar
  • Rice
  • Salt
  • Chicken
  • Eggs
  • Beef
  • Fresh milk
  • Laundry soaps
  • Washing powder
  • Cement
  • Fuel and energy
