Zimbabweans break out of South African maximum prison

Two Zimbabwean prisoners Raphael Nyota (30) and Chris Faku (37) both from Harare escaped  from Kutama Sinthumule Maximum Prison near Makhado in South Africa’s Limpopo province together with three South Africans and a Mozambican.

The inmates took advantage of the chaos which broke out at the prison last week on Thursday night to escape from their cells when prisoners went on a rampage, torched and damaged part of the prison building. Faku, who was convicted of robbery, was however, rearrested on Saturday morning following a tip off together with three South African inmates, Jabulani Isaac Mahlangu (31), Thomas Munyai (29) and Ntshengedzeni Manukha (25).

Nyota, who was jailed for housebreaking and theft, is still at large. South African provincial police spokesperson for Limpopo Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo appealed to Zimbabwe’s police to assist in hunting down Nyota, who is suspected to have crossed back into the country illegally.
