Tawanda Chikonyora (35) who was allegedly assisted by a senior prison officer only identified as Gandiwa, to escape from Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison in Harare was sent back to jail for an effective three years magistrate Ms Victoria Mashamba.
He was initially sentenced to four years but one year was set aside for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence within that period. Chikonyora who escaped prison with only 39 days left to serve from his initial four-year prison sentence told the court that Gandiwa gave him clothes to wear and bus fare before going out of the security walls without any hassles. While passing the sentence, Ms Mashamba said the court was surprised as to why the prison officers involved acted in such a way.
Chikonyora said he was forced to escape by Gandiwa after a senior prison officer stumbled on his phone which was used to send mobile money to some prison officers by inmates in exchange of favours. The prison officer asked for a bribe to remain silent after he saw all the transactions which were being done by the prison officers.
