Magistrate says Police Reaction Group Members Have Case To Answer For After Man Lost His Eye During Assault

Harare Magistrate Farai Gwitima has dismissed the application for discharge filed by five police reaction group (PRG) officers who viciously attacked a Harare man and caused the loss of his eye. Chitima ruled that the five Livingstone Zvimba, Tendai Masungambira, Sunday Nyaude, Khululekani Dale, Evans Mashonganyika have a case to answer and need to be put to their defence. The officers are facing charges of assault but are arguing that the victim could not have identified them as the assault happened at night.

Gwitima ruled that the State had managed to prove that they were at the crime scene when the offence was committed.

Washington Gezana lost his eye after he tried to restrain the five junior police officers, who were allegedly beating his wife, Yvonne Magora for standing at the road intersection, where they were controlling traffic. The court heard that the officers assaulted Magora with open hands and batons before Gezana intervened to rescue her.

They then turned on Gezana and assaulted him with batons, open hands and an unknown object, which injured his right eye.Upon realising that they had injured Gezana they jumped into their service vehicle and drove off. Gezana’s eye was subsequently removed, as it had been severely damaged.
