Speaking to The Herald, National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed yesterday that 79 people had been arrested for contravening Section 46 (2) (f) of the Third Schedule of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23, which criminalises encumbering or obstructing “the free passage along any street, road, thoroughfare, side walk or pavement”.
Nyathi also warned individuals who want take advantage of the operation code-named “Operation Sunshine City” to start violence and stealing. Said Nyathi:
Meanwhile, we would like to warn criminals who want to take advantage of this operation to cause confusion, stealing and committing various criminal activities that the long arm of the law will surely catch up with them.
He also urged business owners not to assist vendors by keeping their items overnight. Said Nyathi:
We urge businesspeople and building owners not to assist vendors to hide wares on their behalf or keep them overnight. Those vendors who are lawfully registered should stick to their allocated points. Those found operating in undesignated points will have their licences withdrawn and will not be registered again.
