NewsDay Journalist Released On Bail After 2 Days In The Cells Over Grace Mugabe Underwear Story

NewsDay Journalist Kenneth Nyangani was released today after being detained at Mutare Central Police Station for two days. Nyangani was arrested on Monday after NewsDay had published a story which alleged that First Lady Grace Mugabe had donated used underwear and nightdresses to Zanu-PF supporters in Mutare.

The police had considered charging Nyangani with criminal defamation but later charged him with Criminal Nuisance. He was released on $200 bail after being represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights’ lawyers Passmore Nyakureba, Peggy Tavagadza and Brian Majamanda.

ZANU PF Member of Parliament for Chikanga-Dangamvura Esau Mupfumi reportedly filed the report with the police and deposed to a statement, although, it is unclear if the legislator is the complainant himself or the First Lady.
