MPs express anger after Speaker tells Minister to respond in English, not Ndebele

Yesterday, MPs from Matabeleland region expressed anger over Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mabel Chinomona’s suggestion that Home Affairs deputy minister Obedingwa Mguni must respond to a question in English instead of Ndebele.

Mguni was responding to a question from Hurungwe East MP, Sarah Mahoka (Zanu PF) who had asked him a question in Shona on why his ministry was continuing to issue children born in Zimbabwe, but of parents of foreign descent, with national identity cards labelled “alien”. Chinomona eventually allowed Mguni to respond in Ndebele and he said that his ministry is looking at the issue of the ‘alien’ status. He said that there is need to align the Birth and Registration Act with the Constitution, so that the issue is solved.
